Our Guide to Timeless Design

Updated:

There are lots of opinions on this subject, but we think that achieving timeless design comes from creating layers on layers on layers. Using natural materials and neutral color palettes to create spaces that are both elegant and lived-in. Here are our go-to rules on creating timeless spaces.

  1. Embrace Natural Materials

We LOVE natural materials like wood, stone, and linens because they have a classic appeal that never goes out of style. They bring warmth, texture, and an organic feel to your home. Mixing things like a solid oak dining table, marble counters, and linen drapes, create an elevated space that you can enjoy for years to come.

  • Wood: Choose beautiful flooring and heirloom quality wood furniture that can be refinished and will last for decades.
  • Stone: Incorporate natural stone in kitchen countertops, bathroom tiles, and even as statement furniture pieces.
  • Linen: Use natural pre-laundered linen for upholstery, bedding, and draperies to introduce a soft, natural texture.
  1. Opt for a Neutral Color Palette

Neutral colors are the foundation of timeless design. Whites, beiges, taupes, and soft greens create a calm and adaptable base for any room. This palette not only exudes sophistication but also allows for versatility if you want to introduce pops of color or change decor elements over time.

  • Furniture: Invest in neutral-colored furniture that can be easily accompanied but fun pillows and throws!
  • Accents: Use natural hues in rugs, art, and decorative items to maintain a cohesive and classic look However, the occasional pop of color in your accents can be a fun way to spice things up!
  1. Invest in Quality Furniture

While we can go on and on about what makes a quality piece of furniture (and we will… in another post 😉). This blog is about timeless spaces, and one of the cornerstones of timeless design is all about quality over quantity. Invest in well-made furniture pieces that can withstand daily use and will look lived-in vs. disheveled.

  • Sofas and Chairs: Choose pieces with 8-way hand tied suspension, wood frames, and quality seat and back cushions.
  • Tables: Opt for solid wood tables or multi-layer veneers over solid wood that can be refinished should you ever choose.
  • Storage: Invest in quality storage furniture, or built-in storage to keep your home organized and clutter-free.
  1. Layer Textures and Patterns

Simplicity is elegance, but that doesn’t mean you should shy away from layering textures and patterns to add depth and interest. Mixing materials is our go-to when designing spaces. Layering textures helps create an elevated, warm, and inviting atmosphere.

  • Rugs: Use textured and natural rugs to define spaces and create a comfortable vibe.
  • Throws and Pillows: Mix different fabrics and subtle patterns to create a cozy and aesthetically pleasing pillow and throw story!
  • Wall Art: Choose original art pieces that complement your color scheme and speak to you.

Achieving a timeless home design is about creating a space that feels both classic and current, elevated, and livable. Embrace the elegance of simplicity and the quiet luxury aesthetic by incorporating natural materials, neutral colors, quality furniture, and thoughtful layouts, to design a home that ignores “of the minute” trends and stands the test of time.
